Giving Hope to a Family Fighting Against All Odds
October 2025 · Fairfax County, VA
This October, we were deeply moved by the story of a local family whose journey has been marked by extraordinary strength and struggle. Their younger son, now almost eight years old, was diagnosed with moderate to severe autism at just two and a half. From early childhood he faced developmental challenges — limited speech, sensory issues, and difficulty eating or communicating his needs. Over the years he has continued receiving speech, occupational, and physical therapy while attending special education classes in Fairfax County.
Despite their tireless efforts, life has tested this family beyond imagination. The father, once earning about $4,500 to $5,000 a month as a bus driver, now makes closer to $3,500 while working 12-hour days to keep up with rent and bills. The mother, who had been the child's primary caregiver, battled and survived breast cancer — and suffered two heart attacks, the most recent just six months ago. Their older son also faced cancer in the past, and now the father himself may be confronting serious health concerns.
